Planning your dream engagement session will be a breeze with these 8 tips!

Why are Engagement Sessions so awesome?

I as your wedding photographer LOVE when I get to photograph your Engagement Session. Not only is it a great way for me to get to work with you before your big day… but its also an opportunity for me to get to hang out with you, to talk more about your wedding plans and life in general and to really get to know you as a couple. Believe me it makes such an impact when it comes time to capturing those raw, authentic moments when you’re in front of my camera on your wedding day. After working together on your Engagement Session I assure you, I’m going in for a hug!

Engagement Sessions are also super helpful for you to feel relaxed and confident on your wedding day. When was the last time you have been photographed professionally? How about together? Think of your session as a dress rehearsal for the big day. After already having rocked your E-session you’ll feel much more at ease when your wedding day arrives.

Portraits with purpose

Did you know… engagement photos have a higher purpose? They are meant to be enjoyed! You had your session, you knocked it out of the park…now what? Perhaps you’ll use them for your save the dates, or as a modern guestbook for your guests to sign at cocktail hour. There’s nothing better than seeing your favorite images printed on canvases and displayed at your wedding or hung in your home. Engagement photos are those rare images where you look your absolute best, but you still look like you… they’re not super formal, they’re fun and depict you doing what you love, where you love, with who you love. So why not show them off, walk by them every day… and each morning on your way out the door smile as you catch a glimpse of that time you and your fiancé ran along the beach or rode the carousel at that park you had your first date at!

Ready to plan your dream Engagement Session?

Awesome! You know you want to make the most out of your engagement session, but there is still so much to consider. Not to worry, that’s where I come in. I am always happy to help you plan a customized engagement session that reflects you and whats important to you. I find most of the time I share the same advice… these are my top 8 tips to planning your dream Engagement Session

engagement session

1. Classy & Comfy- Rocking Two Looks at your Engagement Session

Let’s start off by what to bring for your wardrobe. Try not to think about what other people have worn in their engagement photos. These photos are meant to represent you and your fiancé as a couple. You’ll want to consider what makes you look and feel your best. It’s always fun to showcase two different looks. We recommend a dressier option, and a casual option. Don’t be afraid to get creative with it.

2. Try not to be “Trendy”, Just Be You!

The best images are when you and your fiancé feel the most comfortable. Try not to wear clothes that you feel are uncomfortable or restricting. You want to be able to relax and have fun, you shouldn’t have to worry how your clothes are looking… Rather consider… what do you feel most confident in? Do you have a favorite dress that really compliments your figure? Do you have a favorite top that you get complements on every time you wear it? Maybe red is your color, maybe its black… my power color is black! The idea is you’ll look your best, when you feel your best.

3. Wear Coordinating Colors & Patterns

Coordinating colors means considering what colors compliment each other… this isn’t to say you need to match exactly but rather enhance the color pallet by simply standing next to each other. Patterns can be a great way to really stand out. A bold pattern can add visual interest to your photos just be mindful to not choose competing or clashing patterns. It’s typically best to allow one person to sport the pattern and the other to stick to a solid. 4. Fun with your fur babies

Whenever my couples ask how I feel about incorporating their four legged friends, I just about jump with excitement! I LOVE meeting your fur babies! If you’re considering bringing them along, it’s a good idea to ask a friend or family member to tag along as a handler… they can be in charge of treats and potty breaks and taking the dogs for a walk when it’s time for the two of you to snuggle into a few poses sans pups. Helpful hint: Bring a lint roller!

5. Accessorize!

Accessories are a quick way to personalize and enhance any look. Scarfs, fashion hats, chunky necklaces, or an awesome red bottom heel are all great options. If your planning on rocking a pair of heels, don’t forget a comfy pair of flats to slip on while were walking from location to location.

6. Dress for the Season

What season will you be dressing for? Summertime… maybe sport a cute sundress and a wide brim hat. Wintertime… Layer up! Layers are a great way to add warmth and texture to your wardrobe, and can even be peeled away for a completely different look.

7. Do what you love

8. Timing & Locations

When considering your locations, light is everything. In order to get those dreamy sun kissed images that we love, it is important that we arrive on time. Certain locations require an earlier start time… the city for example, will have the sun dipping behind the skyline much earlier than it would at the beach. If your hoping to make it to a few different locations, I can help you create a plan to maximize your time with that gorgeous light in mind.

Industry Bonus Tip! Look good… Feel good.

  • If you are going to have a hair and makeup trail consider booking it for the day of your engagement session. You will be all glammed up and feeling your most beautiful.
